It’s Been Forever…

It’s been over a month since I’ve updated the girls’ blog, so here I am.

For an exciting bit of news, I e-mailed Rattie Ratz Rescue (RRR) inquiring about their adoption application and showing interest in two of their available girls. Meet Mocha, a three-month-old agouti girl who would become Berlin, and Hazelnut, a three-month-old faun girl who would become Lyon. It’s quite possible that, should they still be available for adoption, they will become a part of our family! I am very, very excited about this prospect, and will update as soon as I get their e-mail back; you have no idea how many pins and needles I’m sitting on waiting!

That being said, Paris and London are doing absolutely fab. I’m especially proud of our most recent encounter! I ended up taking a trip back to my old high school, where I wanted to show them off to a teacher I’d had when I went to school. They immediately drew in a crowd of teachers and freshmen alike, all who wanted a chance at holding one of the girls. I wasn’t at all put-off by the idea of letting Paris be “passed around,” considering she’d always seemed like the more sociable of the two, and she is certainly the more patient/tolerant of the pair. But I decided that I would give London a chance to be out - for one, it’d help socialise her further, if necessary, and for another, I didn’t want Paris to be the only one that received love and praise from their admirers. Into the hands of a student, she went! I stood there on guard, prepared to take her back should anything get out of hand… but I was pleasantly surprised.

London and Paris matched each other in sociability. London might have even surpassed Paris in that aspect, which absolutely blew my mind. The both of them were drawing laughs out of the “audience,” climbing up shoulders, burrowing through hair that was let down over students’ shoulders, etc. I had been prepared to usher a warning or at least utter an apology for London’s tendency to nip, but instead had received one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had since I became their caretaker.

I remember the night I got them, the day after, the assessing of their behaviours and personalities and of their physical condition; it had, at the time, seemed almost hopeless. They were small and “shrimpy.” They were handshy. They were nervous. London nipped and occasionally bit. The problems seemed endless, and though I tracked their progress here, and in conversations with friends and family, I still never expected it to reach this level of success. The both of them, now, are bright-eyed and plump, large and looking like full-grown rats (remind me to post some updated pictures soon!). They’re no longer handshy - still nervous about being taken out of their cage, but once they’re out, they’re bold little buggers. London no longer bites or nips, even through the bars. It’s just remarkable how far they’ve come, and extremely rewarding.

Acrobatics!

London and Paris’ Angelina Ballerina Rat Lounge arrived this morning, so I put it in their cage only to bring out the camera and snap several action (and non-action) shots of their exploring of it! London, however, decided that several wasn’t enough! She proceeded to turn many acrobatic tricks that I managed to capture, to the best of my ability, on camera - much to the delight of my little ham.

And! She sticks the landing~

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

EDIT: London has been reverting to old habits. I’m not sure what’s been up with her, but it’s a little disconcerting, not to mention dishearting, considering she’s been nipping as hard as she has been. I’m not sure what to do about it other than consult the communicator and see if she can reach London and have her tell me what’s up. I’d really like to correct this problem in the gentlest way possible, i.e., without vinegar on the fingertips (or similar methods). She still loves to come out of her cage, and she even accompanied me to the hardware store (after being lucky enough to share a little bit of my McDonald’s bacon, egg and cheese bagel), so I don’t understand why she’s been acting up; it’s only whilst she’s in her cage or in one of her hideaways, so it could very well be my “invading” her territory or otherwise disrupting her. Yet she seems to be fine after she’s fed or after she’s had her nap. It could be because she’s feeling under the weather, because she’s just feeling grumpy (my family kids around about it being PMS)… The possibilities are endless. Here’s to hoping this problem gets fixed again soon!

At least she’s finally got the hang of how to use the hammocks?

Photo Shoot v1

I decided I’d attempt to shoot the girls against the chocolate backdrop of my bedsheets and curtains. Paris, who’s a bit more cautious than London will ever be, explored the bed with caution, but more or less stood still whenever I pointed the camera at her. London, however, was “doing it wrong” the whole dern time!

Flawless rat stack!

London:

Would have been a nice picture… had she been facing the other direction.

The Box!

So I took a box and cut some doors and a flap in it for the girls. I couldn’t get pictures of the girls in it, but I have a video I might later upload to YouTube of them climbing inside and out of it. Though they’re a bit cautious, they overall seem to be enjoying it, so I’m happy leaving it in their play pen.

Bruxing Success

Last night, I was sitting in the shower with the girls. I almost regret not getting a video of it, that’s how much fun they seemed to be having! They were performing acrobatic, flying leaps from my shoulders to my knees to the other end of the shower and back; they were climbing up my arms, over my shoulders and into my hair (Paris even settled down on top of my head a couple times); they were chewing on my loose-fitting PJ pants, and climbing up my pants and into my sweatshirt; etc.

After a little bit of this, they started chittering their teeth really, really loudly. New mommy nerves nipped me in the bud again, worrying me that something was up or I was doing something wrong with ‘em, but someone informed me that this sound, and what I call the “happy eyes” (boggling), is called “bruxing,” and that it’s the rat equivelant to a cat’s purring. I’d heard of this, but had never heard it, if that makes sense.

I guess I’m just feeling really accomplished and on top of the world right now because of it. It’s the first time since I got them last Wednesday that they’ve done that and the first time we’ve actually played like that. Hoorah for bonding, because it’s totally made my day!

Pictures of the New CN!

It’s been a while since I’ve updated, but managed to get their CN set-up and running! Here are some pictures of the set up.

Rats go OMNOMNOM!

Snack Food… v3

  • Dried banana chips
  • Tri-tip
  • Cooked pasta
  • Cheese
  • Ice
  • Corn
  • This plate was filled with corn and peas. Could they have made it more obvious how they felt about the peas?

Corn on the cob was a massive hit with the girls!

EDIT: Stay tuned for a video featuring the Nom Nom song and all their favourite foods!
